🎒 Packing List — Carry-On Backpack Only
Trip: Madeira → Madrid → Barcelona → Valencia → Toledo → Madrid
Dates: May 27 – June 14, 2026 (19 days)
Climate range: 5°C (41°F) at Pico do Arieiro summit → 35°C (95°F) in Toledo
Activities: Hiking, canyoning, beaches, whale watching, city sightseeing, museums, trains
This list is designed to fit in a 40–45L carry-on backpack (max 55×40×20 cm for most airlines). TAP Air Portugal allows 1 carry-on bag + 1 personal item. Pack using compression cubes to maximize space.
👕 Clothing (use packing cubes)
- 4 lightweight t-shirts / tops (quick-dry, moisture-wicking — rotate and hand-wash)
- 1 long-sleeve sun shirt (UPF 50+ — for hikes, boat, and beach days)
- 2 pairs hiking-friendly shorts (zip pockets are a plus)
- 1 pair lightweight long pants / convertible pants (for cathedrals, Basilica dress codes, cooler evenings)
- 1 light sweater or fleece mid-layer (for Pico do Arieiro sunrise at 5°C, Fanal Forest, Montserrat, and plane rides)
- 1 packable rain jacket / windbreaker (waterproof — essential for Madeira's north coast, levada hikes, and Fanal fog)
- 5 pairs underwear (quick-dry)
- 4 pairs socks (2 hiking, 2 lightweight)
- 1 swimsuit (worn frequently — Madeira beaches, Porto Moniz pools, Barceloneta, Machico)
- 1 pair pajamas / sleepwear (lightweight)
💡 Laundry strategy: Hand-wash every 2–3 days using a sink and travel detergent, or use a laundromat in Funchal/Madrid/Barcelona. This keeps the clothing count low.
👟 Footwear (wear the bulkiest pair on the plane)
- 1 pair trail shoes / hiking shoes (worn on the plane — for Pico do Arieiro, Caldeirão Verde, Ponta de São Lourenço, Montserrat, Toledo cobblestones)
- 1 pair water shoes (for Porto Moniz volcanic rock pools, Praia Formosa pebble beach, Seixal, canyoning)
- 1 pair lightweight sandals or flip-flops (for evenings, restaurants, beach transitions)
⚠️ That's 3 pairs total. Wear the hiking shoes, pack the other two. Water shoes compress flat.
🧴 Toiletries (100ml max per container, 1L clear bag for flights)
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ (reef-safe, small tube — buy a larger bottle at Pingo Doce on Day 2)
- Toothbrush + mini toothpaste
- Deodorant (travel size)
- Shampoo/body wash bar (saves space vs. liquids)
- Lip balm with SPF
- Travel-size insect repellent (for levada hikes and Fanal Forest)
- Small pack of wet wipes
- Travel laundry detergent sheets (for hand-washing clothes)
- Any personal medications + motion sickness tablets (for whale watching boat)
- Small first-aid kit: band-aids, antiseptic wipes, blister patches, ibuprofen, antihistamine
🎒 Gear & Accessories
- Headlamp or small flashlight (essential for Caldeirão Verde tunnels and Pico do Arieiro pre-dawn drive)
- Reusable water bottle (1L — Madrid/Barcelona tap water is safe and excellent)
- Packable daypack (ultralight, 15–20L — for hike days when you leave the main backpack at the hotel)
- Microfiber travel towel (quick-dry — for beaches, canyoning, Porto Moniz pools)
- Dry bag / waterproof pouch (for phone and valuables during canyoning, whale watching, and beach days)
- Packing cubes (3–4, compression style)
- Sunglasses (polarized — for ocean glare, hiking, and driving)
- Hat with brim (wide enough for sun protection — critical for Toledo, Ponta de São Lourenço, and Madrid)
- Light gloves + beanie (for Pico do Arieiro sunrise at 5°C — can be cheap ones you discard after Day 3)
📱 Tech & Documents
- Phone + charger + cable
- EU power adapter (Type C/F — same plug works in Portugal and Spain)
- Portable battery pack (10,000 mAh minimum — long days away from outlets)
- Earbuds / headphones (for flights, trains, and kids' entertainment)
- DJI drone + controller + 2–3 spare batteries in LiPo-safe bag (all in carry-on — never checked bags)
- Passports (all 9 — keep in a single organizer pouch)
- Printed copies of: flight confirmations, Renfe train tickets (localizadores: WXMRUUID, 2ZL9GG, + Valencia–Madrid), hotel/apartment check-in details, car rental confirmation, restaurant reservations (Botín, Lateral, Casal da Penha, Casa Carmela, Taberna La Bola, La Barraca, Perrachica)
- Travel insurance documents
- European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or equivalent if applicable
- Driver's license (international driving permit recommended for Madeira car rental)
- Credit/debit cards (notify bank of travel to Portugal + Spain) — Visa/Mastercard widely accepted; carry ~€100 cash as backup
👶 Kids-Specific Extras (per child's backpack)
- 1 small backpack per kid (personal item for the plane)
- Entertainment: tablet/e-reader + headphones, card games, small notebook + pen
- Refillable water bottle (smaller size, 500ml)
- Their own sunscreen stick (easier for reapplication)
- Snack stash (granola bars, dried fruit — for hikes, trains, and long drives)
- Light jacket (they lose body heat faster — especially the 8-year-old at altitude)
- Swimsuit (can be worn under clothes on beach days)
🚫 What NOT to Pack
- Bulky jeans (too hot for Spain, too heavy for a backpack)
- Multiple pairs of shoes beyond the 3 listed (space killer)
- Full-size toiletries (buy sunscreen and shampoo at Pingo Doce on Day 2)
- Hardcover books (use e-reader or phone)
- Laptop (unless absolutely needed — this is vacation)
- Hair dryer (all accommodations will have one)
- Towels (hotels provide them; bring only the microfiber for beach/hike days)
